Social Living Spaces
Every day can be beautiful in this neighbourhood.
2019
In Jalan Kukoh, a large number of elderly lives alone. These elderly took part in simple activities to pass their time on a daily basis yet they still face isolation. Activity such as taking a scroll or chit-chatting with their friends is a common sight to see. Unlike other rental estates, the lack of facilities and security in the neighbourhood leads to the deterioration in emotions and affects their mental well being.
The social aspect of this project is a necessity as it creates the awareness of their neighbours well being thus, establishing relationships. Through this, the interaction helps to retain the sense of dignity and compassion of the residents and also, instils empathy towards each other. Having this engagement in the social space forms a lasting bond similarly to a family. Thus, to design pockets of spaces within the blocks that could connect the elderly and the younger generation together.
Situated in the central of Singapore, Jalan Kukoh has been categorized as a poor estate. It was once known as a notorious place for drug users and gang fights, but those days are over. This stereotype from the past has hindered the ‘kampung spirit’ of the residents. All these people have one thing in common, the loss of dignity and a certain type of happiness, a social connection.
Bridging Homes
Taking the route they take every day for their daily activities and putting it close to home. Expanding the space they use daily and putting in those activities. Thus,  this would collide with others. From here, social interaction is created. More relationships will form.
Social Balcony
Grow. Play. Gather
Taking on the daily movement of their activities and bringing it close to home. As they tend to cross-pathed with each other, in other words, intersect into each other boundaries. This creates a shared space between neighbours and uses the space for communal activity. Using this space to tackle isolation in the block. Exploring the possibility of living alongside each other rather than next to each other. There are differences in size catering to the number of neighbours.
